Pennsylvania not accepting Florida horses

by Jerry Connors, the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission

Harrisburg, PA — Anton J. Leppler, Deputy Director of Harness Racing for the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission, has announced because of the case of strangles that recently surfaced in Florida, no horses will be accepted at Pennsylvania harness tracks from Pompano Park and Florida until further notice.

“The regulatory veterinarians of Pennsylvania will be in contact with the veterinarians in Florida,” Leppler said, “and will proceed accordingly from those reports. As in the past, we will be working very closely with our racetrack operators, the horsemen, and the veterinarians. This action is being taken to protect the Standardbred horse colony at our three racetracks.”
