Pocono opens 2021 season Saturday

Wilkes-Barre, PA — The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono opens its 55th racing season with a 14-race card this Saturday afternoon (Feb. 6). Post time is 12:30 p.m.

The headliner on the inaugural card is a $14,000 fast-class pace slotted for race 10. Redbank Blaze A, who has closed strongly while competing at Yonkers for trainer Jose Godínez and the Godínez Racing Stable LLC, is the 5-2 morning line favorite. George Napolitano Jr., who seeks his 10th consecutive Pocono driving title, will drive the Rocknroll Hanover gelding from post one.

The winningest trainer at Pocono last year, Ron Burke, sends the 3-1 second choice in the feature, Bettor Memories. Matt Kakaley is listed to drive the Bettor’s Delight gelding from post eight.

Among Burke’s other three entrants on the card is Sailboat Hanover, a son of Captaintreacherous who is the early favorite in the $12,000 pacing co-feature, with Kakaley listed to drive.

In the trotting co-feature, Get Legs, a son of Muscle Hill, will begin from post eight for the team of trainer Julie and driver Andy Miller. Now a 4-year-old Get Legs won the first five starts of his career last fall before finishing third against tough opposition at The Meadowlands last time out.

The Downs will be dark for Super Bowl Sunday, but then the regular February schedule of Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. will kick in, with the racing on those two days focused on first-round action in the $495,000 Game Of Claims series.
