Pocono, PHHA host Harness Horse Youth Foundation Camp

Wilkes-Barre, PA — The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen’s Association, is getting ready to welcome the Harness Horse Youth Foundation Camp to the historic five-eighths-mile track from Monday (Aug. 5) to Wednesday (Aug. 7).

Six girls and one boy from various locations throughout Pennsylvania and New York will arrive on Monday morning and will spend three days learning about harness racing while working hands-on with the HHYF’s stable of Trottingbred horses. Their days will be filled spending time with the horses and learning about their care and grooming, equipment, conformation, lameness, history, stable management, and equine careers.

Camp director Ellen Taylor and her counselors will be assisted by Pocono horsemen who volunteer their time for the week with the various learning activities. Previous experience with horses is not necessary, and for most of the children, this will be their first time around horses.

The Harness Horse Youth Foundation is a charitable 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing young people and their families educational opportunities with harness horses, in order to foster the next generation of participants and fans. The Foundation was established in 1976 and its programs include interactive learning experiences with these versatile animals, scholarship programs and educational materials.
