Pocono to host Harness Horse Youth Foundation Summer Camp

by Jennifer Starr, Racing Marketing Manager, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs

Wilkes-Barre, PA — The Harness Horse Youth Foundation is sponsoring a five-day overnight harness horse camp at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs from July 19-23.

Twelve Northeast PA children, ages 12-14, will be experiencing the thrill of harness racing from start to finish, all the while learning teamwork, friendship, hard work, and having fun while doing it.

Applicants will work hands-on with the HHYF’s stable of Trottingbred horses. They will learn everything from how to care for and groom the horses; what type of equipment is used; information about lameness; history of the sport of harness racing; stable management, and ultimately, equine careers. The camp is one of ten across the country being conducted by HHYF this summer.

The week-long camp will end with several exciting races featuring all participants on Saturday, July 23.

The Harness Horse Youth Foundation is a charitable 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing young people and their families educational opportunities with harness horses, in order to foster the next generation of participants and fans. The Foundation was established in 1976 and its programs include interactive learning experiences with these versatile animals, scholarship programs and educational materials.
