Pompano Park to raise purses

by Steve Wolf, Director of Marketing, Pompano Park

Pompano Beach, Florida – March 29, 2006 – Track management announced today that there would be a 10% across the board purse raise at Pompano Park Harness Track for the summer meet May 17 through September 16, 2006.

“We want to reward the Florida horsemen who race and train here year-round.” Said Dick Feinberg, General Manager at Pompano Park. “With the advent of slot machine gaming on the horizon next season, we are willing to overpay purses to help our local horsemen who were with us through Hurricane Wilma and the aftermath.”

Purse raises will see the Preferred Pace class rise to $10,000 while the $4,000 claimers purse will rise to $2,420.

Gordon T ($101.80, $78.60, $19.60), a 49-1 long shot, upset the field in the fourth race $2,800 trot Wednesday and keyed the 4-6-10 trifecta combination that paid $11,621.00. Driven by Laurie Poulin, Gordon T won by a neck over 11-1 Miss Biggie Smalls ($9.40, $4.60) with 8-1 Money Minded ($4.40) third.

It was the first win in eleven starts this year for Gordon T, who is trained and owned by David Myrick of Margate. Gordon T covered the one-mile race in 2:02.3.

The 9/5 race favorite Pink Wind and driver Mickey McNichol were on the lead coming down the stretch when Pink Wind went off-stride and ran into both Dawns Angel (David Ingraham) and Armbro Affluent (Bruce Ranger) as Poulin was able to weave between horses and edge out Miss Biggie Smalls (Claude Richards) who was coming up the rail.

Wally Hennessey had the hot hands Wednesday, scoring a Grand Slam with four winners on the night.
