Pompano’s new season to feature higher purses

by John Berry, for Pompano Park

Pompano Beach, FL — Pompano Park’s 2014-2015 season gets underway on Saturday (Oct. 4) with a purse boost, new post time, a new buffet of wagering options and an added perk of an agreement with TVG to showcase the racing.

The 126 day meeting will feature a 7:30 p.m. post time and an estimated purse structure of $8.2 million through next year’s closing date of June 27.

Brett Revington, Director of Racing, said, “During our peak season, we expect to offer an average of $75,000 in purses per night, including a stretch of four weeks from mid-January to mid-February where we race five nights per week.”

The wagering menu will include the popular superfecta on every race with a new 20 cent minimum, enabling our patrons both north and south of the border to participate in a wagering friendly environment.

Pompano Park’s Pick-4 pool will feature an amiable 12 percent takeout with that wager further enhanced with a $5,000 guarantee beginning Nov. 3, continuing through the peak of the season.

The track is also offering — for the first time — a Hi-5 betting option on the final race of all programs. The Hi-5 requires the bettor to select the first five finishers in exact order.

Revington expects “keen” interest in this new offering. He said, “There must be one unique winner to take down the entire pool. If there are multiple winners, they would share in 50 percent of the net pool with the other 50 percent carried over from program to program until there is a single winner. This new wager could very well provide some exciting times here.”

The TVG agreement also should prove to be a big boost for Pompano Park, which has hosted world class harness racing since 1964.

Revington continued, “We look forward to our upcoming season with a renewed enthusiasm based on our new wagering options, invigorating promotions and a bulging stall application list featuring new stables and a waiting list. It should be the most competitive season we have ever had!”

The initial draw for the Oct. 4 opener is Wednesday (Oct. 1). The entry box closes at 9 a.m.
