Purple Haze wins Dancer Filly Memorial

by Leon Zimmerman, for the New Jersey Sire Stakes

Purple Haze, a daughter of Muscles Yankee, trotted to a 2:00.1 victory in the $90,650 Harold R. Dancer Filly Memorial today at Freehold Raceway.

With David Miller driving, the filly made a strong move on the backstretch to gain the lead by the three-quarter-mile mark and held on to win by a neck over a fast closing Victoria Volo, who was clocked in the same time. Contender Hanover was three-quarters of a length back in third.

The 1-2 finishers had won their respective elimination heats on September 12 in the special stakes race for two-year-old New Jersey-sired trotting fillies that is sponsored by the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey. It is a filly companion race to the Dancer Memorial for colts that honors the memory of the late prominent trainer of trotters.

Purple Haze, trained by Syl King Jr. for owners Alvin Jacobsen of Cromford, NY and Sidney Korn of Monmouth Beach, NJ scored her third win in seven starts this year. She has earned $94,325.
