Queen Serene (Trond Smedshammer) holds off Passionate Glide to win the second heat.

Lexington, KY — Queen Serene set a 1:52 world record in scoring a shocking upset of favored Passionate Glide in the second heat of the Kentucky Filly Futurity on Friday at The Red Mile.

Trainer-driver Trond Smedshammer sent her to the front near the first quarter and never relinquished the lead. Passionate Glide sat second-over behind Buck I St Pat and tipped three wide with a quarter-mile to go, but could not catch Queen Serene.

Queen Serene, a daughter of Dream Vacation, paid $41.40 to win. The mile reduces the world record of 1:52.1 set by Continentalvictory in the 1996 Hambletonian.

Now Queen Serene and Passionate Glide will return for a race-off to determine which filly gets the trophy. Second elimination winner Four Starz Lindy was scratched from the race-off.
