Apache Dame recorded her second Mares Open Handicap pace in a row on Tuesday at Dover Downs.

Dover, DE — Apache Dame, reigning ‘Horse of the Meet’ last season, recorded her second $26,000 Mares Open Handicap pace in a row on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Dover Downs.

Teamed with Ross Wolfenden, Apache Dame made short work of six rival distaffs to score a 1:51.4 victory in the week’s top female event.

This time it was more of a challenge as Gabrielles Girl and Corey Callahan ranged alongside down the stretch but the 9-year-old daughter of Apaches Fame-Amerissa, trained by Peter Tritton, persevered at the wire for her second win of the year in three starts for Paul McDougall and WJ McDougall Racing. Lofty Widget finished third for Ron Pierce.

Lazy Running N, former Horse of the Year at Monticello, made it two-for-two this year with a 2:02 win for Jordan Stratton.

Trained by Dave Stratton for owner John Kiwczak, Lazy Running N was guided to victory by Jordan Stratton. Three years ago Lazy Running N was the Horse of the Year at Monticello Raceway when the foreign-bred daughter of Christian Cullen won over $72,000 and earned a record of 1:54.4.

Though she earned $42,675 during the 2008 campaign and another $35,787 last season she won just six races over the last two seasons and her racing prowess was diminished to an extent.

On Jan. 19 the elder Stratton entered Lazy Running N in a $10,00 claimer and the pacing mare rallied in the deep stretch to a 2:00.2 victory for Dave’s son, Jordan. On Tuesday, despite racing on a track that was less than perfect, Lazy Running N paced the final half-mile in :59.3 en route to a one length triumph.

“She’s been a consistent race mare throughout her career,” noted Jordan Stratton who has been the mare’s regular pilot since she moved here from New Zealand. Lazy Running (N) landed here during the 2006 season and since then she has won $172,000.”

The victory with Lazy Running N ($7.30) was one of three on the card at Monticello for Jordan Stratton. He also scored with Art Green, Michael Groff and Ira Lustgarten’s Million Dollar Baby ($2.70) in a 1:59.1 clocking and won with Heather Arruda’s Casablanca Hall ($4.10) in 1:59.1.

But Stratton, who has been among North America’s leading drivers since he began competing on a regular basis in 2007, wasn’t finished for the day. He traveled to Yonkers Raceway, where last year he was second best behind Jason Bartlett, and proceeded to win two more races for a total of five on Jan. 26.
