Caviar Forthe Lady holds on, wins Meadows Filly & Mare Trot

Washington, PA — Caviar Forthe Lady opened a daylight lead with a blistering third quarter, then hung on late to capture Monday’s $22,500 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.

After Charlie Norris sent Caviar Forthe Lady to the front past the quarter, the 5-year-old daughter of SJ’s Caviar-Croupier Lady reeled off the third panel in :27.3 to put away all pursuers on the outside. But BV’s Sister popped off the pylons late with a strong brush, only to fall a neck short. Spectacular Bay shot the Lightning Lane for third. The winning time was 1:55.2.

Marty Wollam trains Caviar Forthe Lady, who now boasts $537,156 in lifetime earnings, for Acadia Farms. The win left Norris two short of 2,000 career driving victories.

Dave Palone drove six winners — five for trainer Ron Burke — on the 14-race card.

Plainridge Racecourse
Wine Guide, with Jolene Andrews driving, ran away from the field in the amateur ranks on Monday at Plainridge. The win was the sixth in the last nine starts for Wine Guide, all coming with Andrews in the bike. The star of the day, however, came in the sixth race when Gray Bomber, with John Nason driving, found room along the rail to post his eighth win in 17 tries in the $4,500 featured pace. The horse was the winner of this year’s $20,000 Beckwith Memorial race. Driver Mike Eaton drove the upset of the afternoon with Montana Steel in the $4,500 feature for trotters. Sent off at 11-1, the day’s longshot returned $25.80 to win for trainer Donald Gaudette, Jr.
