Racing Roundup: Coffee Addict comes first-over to take Meadows feature

Washington, PA — Coffee Addict movedfirst-over to wear down a stubborn Stuck Like Glue and capture Wednesday’s$22,500 Filly & Mare Not Listed Preferred/Preferred Handicap Pace at TheMeadows.

Stuck Like Glue endured a parked-out 26.4first quarter before reaching the front from post nine. Under Wilbur Yoder’surging, Coffee Addict inched away in mid-stretch and downed her game rival by1/2 length in 1:51.4. Certified Ideal was a non-threatening third.

Norm Parker trains Coffee Addict, a5-year-old daughter of Dragon Again-Kahlua Queen who now boasts $391,678 incareer earnings, for James Clarke, Sr. and Andrew Altobelli.

Brian Zendt piloted three winners on the15-race card.

Two divisions of $7,700 Open II pacing mares headlined the card at BataviaDowns on Wednesday night (Oct. 7) with eleven ladies going postward.The betterof the two contests turned out to be the second when Country Delight ($5.00)took a pocket trip en route to winning the seventh race by a long length.Memumsnotnice(Kevin Cummings) got away sharply as Country Delight (Jack Flanigen) tucked inbehind her as the only leaver in the race. From there, Cummings led the fieldthrough fractions of :28, :58.2 and 1:27 before they circled the far turn.Atthe top of the stretch it appeared as if Memumsnotnice had the race won, butFlanigen shooed Country Delight into the passing lane where she acceleratedpast the leader to win in 1:55.4. It was the ninth win of the year for the5-year-old American Ideal mare who has now earned $57,473 in purses this yearfor owner James Frandsen. Country Delight is trained by James Clouser Jr.In thefirst division, Infrontigo Hanover (Jim McNeight) went to front immediately atthe start and maintained that position the entire mile, hanging on to beat thepocket-sitting 1-9 favorite, Climate Hanover (Drew Monti) by a mere nose in1:57. It was the fifth win of 2015 for Infrontigo Hanover who now has $50,444in the bank for the year. The 7-year-old Western Hanover mare is trained by BobGruber III, who co-owns with Summer Wind Stable of NY. Driver John Cummings Jr.was on fire Wednesday, winning five races on the card. He took his picture withLG’s Pride ($65.50), Seascape Hanover ($5.10), Voltina ($10.80), Hawaiian Joe($4.60) and Regal Beau ($4.60). Sean McDonough and Jack Flanigen each haddriving doubles. Racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Friday night with the firstpost set to go at 6:35 p.m.

Ellen McNeil’s Looney Dune ($3.80) made all the pace in Wednesday (October 7)evening’s featured $7,000 top-level conditioned pace for mares at Vernon Downs,turning aside a mid-race challenge from Table Games before holding off thelate-charging Asset Management. Ben McNeil used his inside post to protect the early leadwith the 7-year-old Bettor’s Delight mare, pocketing Express Jet (JohnMacDonald) through a :26.3 initial quarter mile before responding to a stoutfirst-over challenge from Table Games (Frank Davis) through the middlehalf. As Looney Dune dug in through a :27.4 third quarter, the third-overAsset Management (Fern Paquet, Jr.) launched her bid from off cover, chargingstoutly through the stretch. Despite 18-1 shot Asset Management’s rally,Looney Dune had plenty left to hold by half a length, prevailing in1:52.1. Kardashian (Truman Gale) emerged from traffic to just take third,while 9-5 second choice Pancakes (Chris Lems) only managed a fourth-placeeffort from her second-over trip after she was caught in a blind switch aquarter mile from home. John McNeil, III trains Looney Dune. Claude Huckabone,III led all drivers on the card with three wins, teaming up with Turn Em On($21.00, 1:55.3), Act of Valor ($6.80, 1:58.2), and Day to Ponder ($15.80,1:53.4).
