Drew Campbell dominates at Scarborough

Scarborough, ME — The fans at Scarborough Downs were treated to an overpowering performance from driver Drew Campbell on Sunday (10/20) as the meet’s leading driver scored five wins and four seconds on the eleven-race program.

Driver Drew Campbell held the hot hand at Scarborough Downs on Sunday winning five races on the card; one with KitKat Du Ruisseau (pictured), who is owned and trained by David McClellan.

His winners included BestFillyNTown (1:58.3), Champagne Charlie (1:57.4), KitKat Du Ruisseau (1:57.1), Passion Moon (1:58.3) and Keystone Stately (2:02.4).

“Looking at the program, I thought I could have a strong day today, and it worked out that way,” said Campbell. “I had a bunch of decent horses to drive and they all had good shots.”

Entering Sunday’s performance, Campbell was rated the leading UDRS driver in North America, sporting a .410 rating. Aware of his current standing, Campbell downplayed any inference that it motivated his performance today.

“No, I don’t think about it a lot,” Campbell remarked. “How long can that last, a week? Maybe the rest of the year. Gilles Barrieau needs about 50 more starts to get into my category and when he does, he’ll have a decent lead over me. The odds of holding on are slight, but if I’m batting .410, I’m doing my job, I guess.”

Campbell remains on top of the Scarborough Downs’ leader board, approaching the century mark with 99 wins, holding an 11-win advantage over closest rival, Gary Mosher.

Colonial Downs
Candid Photo, Eloise Eden and Blueridge Adalia, champion 2-year-old Virginia-breds in 2012, each won their respective $5,000 3-year-old prep races Sunday afternoon at Colonial Downs. A total of $380,000 in purse monies will be up for grabs among eight freshman and sophomore divisions in next Sunday’s annual “Day of Champions” card. Candid Photo wired a modest field in the colt/gelding trot in a lifetime best 1:57.4. The Classic Photo gelding triggered quarter panels of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:27.4 before crossing 2-3/4 lengths ahead of Flaming Yankee. Candid Photo, is co-owned by trainer Jane Dunavant and Katherine Smith. Dusty Sea was second and Flaming Yankee took third. Eloise Eden was dominant as a 2-year-old and coasted home to an easy 13 length romp Sunday in the filly trot. The Ken Warkentin filly shot to the front as the starting gate wings closed and never looked back, leading by 6 at the quarter and 8 at the half. Betting choice I Concur, fresh off back to back wins by 10-plus lengths, held second through the third fraction but went off-stride in mid-stretch after starting to gain ground on the leader. Driver Ronnie Wrenn Jr. guided Eloise Eden to fractions of :27.4, :56.2 and 1:25.2, and with no one close in the stretch, coasted home in 1:56.1. She is trained by Thomas Litt for Mark Bowser of Charlottesville, Virginia. Blueridge Adalia grabbed the pocket early in the filly pace but just after the first fraction, came outside and passed Miss Sowo, then continued a front-stepping trip en route to a 4-length win in 1:54.1. Reinsman Chris Page, who also guided Candid Photo’s Virginia-bred triumph, led the Badlands Hanover filly for trainer Morgan Hagerman and owner Herman Hagerman. Miss Sowo held on for second while get Party Perfect was third. Mark Gray’s Southern Hoss went coast to coast in the colt/gelding pace, beating five others including his stablemate Stately Man. The The Panderosa gelding cut panels of :27.3, :56.3 and 1:25.1 before winning his second race in 1:53.1. The mark shattered his prior best by over three seconds. Charles Perry drove Southern Hoss for owner Anne McDonald. Wynnfield Spirit was second and The Virginian took third.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway
Little Santamonica, with Jim Devaux in the sulky, captured Sunday’s featured Filly & Mare Open Pace with a purse of $16,050. Owned by Kelly Dawn Hope of Vernon, NY and trained by Joe Hope, the 5-year-old Little Steven mare posted a winning time of 1:54.4.
