Wednesday’s (September 5) edition of Racing Roundup features results stories from Batavia Downs and Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

Evil Eva Cruises in Batavia Downs feature
Batavia, NY — It looked like a dangerous combination on paper before the start of the $9,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace at Batavia Downs Wednesday night as Evil Eva was starting off the rail with leading driver Shawn Gray in the sulky.

And it proved to be a lethal combination on the track as well as Evil Eva ($3.50) and Gray left little doubt who was the best, going wire-to-wire in 1:55.2 to register an easy 3-3/4 length victory.

Evil Eva zoomed right to the top and Gray just sat back enjoyed the ride from there, using fractions of :29.0, :58.0, 1:26.1 in coasting to her eighth win of the season in 21 starts. Evil Eva has only finished out of the money in four tries in 2012.

You’re Too Funny (Jack Flanigen), the winner of last week’s Open Pace, didn’t have any answers and finished a distant second while The Mistress (Dan Noble) took third.

With the win, Evil Eva, owned by Mo Coo Inc. of Merrick, N.Y. and Jonathan Klee Racing of Mineola, N.Y., increased her seasonal winnings to $58,885. Alicia Gray conditioned the winner.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway
Trainer Margaret Spagnola had a monster night on Wednesday at Saratoga as she added four wins to her season’s total. Young pacer Back Beyond (Artiscape) broke his maiden in the evening’s opener with Scott Mongeon in the sulky. The night just kept getting better for Spagnola as her Art Bettor Now (Bettor’s Delight) prevailed for the second time in three local tries, scoring in 1:58 with Brian Cross in the sulky. Spagnola trotters You Bet Your Life (Malabar Man) pulled off the upset at 26-1 and Jocular went wire-to-wire to complete the training grand slam. Mongeon and Cross each piloted two of the Spagnola winners on the card. Spagnola currently sits in a tie for third in the trainer standings for 2012.
