Mach’s Beach Boy wins Saturday feature at Yonkers

Yonkers, NY —Mach’s Beach Boy (Pat Lachance, $5.30) held off a two-pronged challenge Saturday night, winning Yonkers Raceway’s featured $26,000 winners over pace.

Mach’s Beach Boy was a narrow winner in the Yonkers feature.

Inheriting the pole after an inside scratch, Mach’s Beach Boy saw Orillia Joe (Jordan Stratton) make the first lead. Mach’s Beach Boy then moved — apparently, just in time — in front of Rockstar Temper (Dan Dube). It was Mach’s Beach Boy putting up intervals of :27.4 and :57 as BJ’s Guy (Brent Holland) took out of fifth.

Mach’s Beach Boy maintained the advantage in and out of the 1:25.2 three-quarters, taking a length lead into the lane. He then kept both Orillia Joe and BJ’s Guy at bay, whipping the former by a neck in 1:53. Rockstar Temper and Stolen Car (Eric Carlson) rounded out the payees. Ronny Bugatti (Mark MacDonald, three wins for second consecutive night) was a jammed-in sixth as the 6-5 favorite.

For second choice Mach’s Beach Boy, a 5-year-old Mach Three gelding trained by his driver for Ontario co-owners Dan Mogridge and Jeff Oborne, it was his ninth win in 31 seasonal starts. The exacta paid $68.50, with the triple returning $297.50.

With seven double-figure win payoffs included in the 12-race card, the Pick-5 was not hit. Thus, the Sunday matinee gimmick begins with a double carryover of $7,091.34 (50 cent base wager on races five through nine).

The Raceway’s five program per week live schedule changes, with first post every Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:10 p.m., and the third of six Sunday matinees (replacing Tuesday evenings) this weekend at 11 a.m. Evening simulcasting accompanies all night programs, with afternoon simulcasting available daily.

Hollywood Dayton Raceway
For the second straight Saturday night Lucky Lime (Shawn Barker II) closed from fifth at the three-quarters to narrowly beat an outstanding full field of Open pacers at Dayton Raceway. With four new invaders from recently-closed Hoosier Park and a Yonkers invader who was recently purchased by Ohio connections, the cast was somewhat different for the $10,000 event, but the exciting stretch drive and ultimate result was the same. Lucky Lime’s 1:53 score was his seventh of the season and 18th of his career, pushing his lifetime earnings to $202,257. The 5-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover is owned by Kirk Nichols and trained by Dean Glispie. Masters Champion (Kyle Ater) finished a lapped-on second, a scant nose in front of show finisher Rockin Finish (Randy Tharps). Barker also guided Fudge to a 1:53.3 score in an $8,000 condition and optional claiming event a race earlier. Fudge was claimed for $8,000 a month ago and following a fourth place finish in his first outing for his new owner-trainer Cole Fitzwater he has now reeled off three straight triumphs against $10,000, then $15,000 and now $20,000 claiming company. The 4-year-old gelding, also a son of Rocknroll Hanover, has now won 12 times in 32 tries during his 2014 campaign. Lieutenant Steve (Chris Page) was second with El Shooter (Dan Noble) getting the show dough.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway
For the second consecutive Saturday night, Aussie Reactor A prevailed in the featured pace at Saratoga Casino and Raceway. The Kathleen Allen-trained pacer is in the midst of a big couple of months which has culminated in back-to-back victories in the $16,000 Winners Over Pace at the Spa. Shawn Gray piloted Aussie Reactor A (Camcracker) to nearly carbon copy scores in each of the last two Saturday features. Starting from post two, the 9-year-old pacer marched out to the early lead and never looked back in both of his most recent victories. The 11th win on the season for Aussie Reactor A came in 1:53.2. Spinarama (Austin Siegelman), who was the runner-up to Aussie Reactor A last week, once again finished second behind his co-favorite while Village Jackson (Stephane Bouchard) earned the show spot. Live racing continues on Sunday afternoon at Saratoga with a matinee beginning at 12:15 p.m.
