Green and Pierce have big day at Dover

Dover, DE — Trainer Josh Green and driver Ron Pierce both posted five winners at Dover Downs on Jan. 12, while Steeler won the $32,500 Delaware Special, one of four wins for driver Eric Goodell.

Steeler, with reinsman Goodell, had just enough to hold off a late stretch drive from Art Director (Brian Sears) to score a 1:51.4 victory in the night’s biggest race. JK Lullabye (Corey Callahan) spent much of the backstretch on the outside chasing down leader Mr Apples (Jim Morand) and continued on to finish third. The win was the third of four for driver Goodell and one of five for trainer Green — a new track record for a trainer on a single program.

In the $26,000 Open, White Hot Cards made it two-in-a-row and three of his last five for Ken Wood, Steve Iaquinta and Bill Dittmar. Corey Callahan was at the controls for trainer Eric Ell in the 1:52.1 win. The Midnight Owl N (Jonathan Roberts) put in a big mile to finish second, edging Cool Cal (Tony Morgan).

Driven To Win, a gallant 8-year-old Jenna’s Beach Boy-She’s The Greatest warrior, moved closer to becoming a millionaire for Martha and Milt Frank, Ted Gewertz and trainer Joe Holloway when Brian Sears moved between horses to notch a 1:52.3 triumph in a $22,000 Winners Over Pace. Western Hot Shot (Ron Pierce) had taken the lead halfway down the lane but saw a three-race win streak end with a second-place finish. Ruffled Tux (Tony Morgan) closed well to finish third. Driven To Win has now banked $968,353 in his career.

Battleshoe Victor wires the field at Isle Pompano Park

Pompano Beach, FL — Battleshoe Victor ($5.00) was able to lead from start to finish in capturing the $16,000 Open Handicap Trot at the Isle Pompano Park on Monday in 1:55.1.

Trained by Tom Harmer and driven to victory by Anthony Napolitano, Battleshoe Victor just held the field at bay the entire race, winning by 1-1/4 lengths over Farmer Jones (Kevin Wallis) and Catamount N (Wally Hennessey).

It was the first win this year and the 27th career victory for Michael Polansky’s Battleshoe Victor, who is a 7-year-old gelding by Valley Victor.

Double Dream N cops Monticello feature

Monticello, NY — Double Dream N led from start to finish en route to winning the weekly pacing feature for fillies and mares at Monticello Raceway on January 12. Billy Parker, Jr. reined the foreign-bred daughter of Dream Away to a 1:59.4 triumph.

After they started from the pole position, Parker gunned Double Dream N to the lead and they remained unchallenged until the field reached the backstretch the second time around when Billy Dobson moved Rootintootinfilly out to challenge, but third on the outside was as close as Dobson’s mare got to the front-end.

Still with a length lead at the top of the stretch, Double Dream N and Parker braced for La Diavla and driver Greg Merton, who were enjoying a two-hole covered trip to that point.

In the lane Merton sent La Diavla to the passing lane and though they gained with every stride they ran out of racetrack as Parker kept urging his mare without the use of a whip. At the finish Double Dream N was a head victor over La Diavla with Drinking Games rallying to be third for Mike Micallef.

Double Dream N, who was named aged pacing mare of the year last season at the Mighty M, came to Parker in mid-season last year after she became unmanageable at the Meadowlands and the veteran horseman worked his magic. Not only did he get the mare’s confidence but settled her disposition and got her back to her winning ways.

The victory was the third in five starts with Parker since she’s back in his barn after racing in Canada during the fall of last season. The mare is owned by Redmak Enterprises LLC of Ossining, N.Y.
