Mud Pie Hanover takes Meadows F&M pace

Washington, PA — Parked the entire first quarter, Mud Pie Hanover was unassailable once she made the front, capturing Friday’s $22,500 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows in a sharp 1:52.3.

Leaving from post nine, Mud Pie Hanover got the worst of the opening panel on a blustery, snowy evening. But she persevered for Eric Ledford, and once on the point, she brooked no serious challenge. No Sugar Needed was second, while Crossthreaded rallied for show.

Jason Robinson trains Mud Pie Hanover, a 6-year-old daughter of Allamerican Native-Mud Hen who extended her career bankroll to $249,334, for Robert Main.

Dave Palone drove six winners on the 15-race card for five different trainers: Ron Burke, John Moschetta, Jr., Mike Palone, Tim Twaddle and Dan Walski.

Buffalo Raceway
Chester invader Bertos Angel, a 5-year-old Ken Warkentin mare, out of the Incredible Abe mare Spark Of Abbey, won the $10,000 Open Trot in 2:02 for owner Scott Woogen. It was the first win this season for Bertos Angel, who won her last two races last year at Chester to end the season. Bertos Angel ($6.00) leaving from post six and driven by Kevin Cummings, left alertly and settled in fourth as Jam And Jelly (Ron Beback, Jr.) hit the quarter-mile marker in :30.3 and the half in 1:01.4. Eventual second place finisher Hello Carlo (Jack Flanigen) was first-over down the backstretch, with Bertos Angel right behind. It was a good stretch battle between the top two that saw Bertos Angel prevail by 1-1/4 lengths at the wire. Isthatallyougot (Shawn Gray), the favorite in the race, finished third. Trained by Lisa Lederhouse, it was the 12th lifetime win in 50 attempts for Bertos Angel, whose lifetime earnings now stand at $197,050.

Cal Expo
Winners over trotters, racing for a purse of $4,500, were featured at Cal Expo on a nasty windy Friday night in which Putoneonnetformom romped. Leading by 2-1/2 lengths at the head of the lane and under wheel-disc urging, the 8-year-old opened up with every stride and had five lengths on his foes with an eighth of a mile to go, then coasted home while not urged in the last sixteenth of the mile to record a 7-1/4 length victory ($9.00). Bred and owned by Jeff, Gerald and Diana Cimini, the gelding stopped the timer at 2:03.4 for driver James Kennedy. Giles L S Hanover finished in second and Franks Best was another eight lengths farther back in third. On the 14-race program, leading driver Steve Wiseman had five winners.
