Painite prevailed in a five-horse finish at Vernon Downs on Friday evening.

Pop I (John MacDonald) would control all the early fractions of :27.1, :56.4 and 1:25.0, but in the stretch it would be a wide-open finish that was five-wide going to the wire. Painite (Plesac) somehow squeezed through the smallest of openings and just nipped Pop I (second). The Big Muscle (Joe Nassimos) finished third.

Painite ($19.60) won in a lifetime best of 1:54.1. Owned by Donn Lewandrowski with Gail Farreill and trained by Gale, the 8-year-old mare would record her third win on the season and would get her 22nd career victory.

Gale would also get a victory with Party Jammer ($9.30).

Chris Lems would win three on the night. He went into the winner’s circle with Stick With Me Kid ($2.70), Manattack ($3.20), and Fuzzylegsandall ($26.20).

Vernon Downs returns to live action on Saturday (Oct. 7) with a nine-race card starting at 6:45 p.m.

Brown Brinny (Jereme’s Jet) became a rare distaffer to win back-to-back tries in the filly and mare Open at Saratoga Casino Hotel this season. The Brittany Robertson-trained mare was the public’s 6-5 betting favorite on Friday as she looked to repeat off her first victory in the $18,000 local feature last week. Dan Cappello Jr. situated Brown Brinny into the pocket as rival Glenferrie Bronte N (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) took the early lead. The fractions were fast in the Open and after Glenferrie Bronte N dispatched one challenge, she didn’t have enough to hold off Brown Brinny in the stretch. Brown Brinny matched her lifetime mark with the win which came in 1:53.4. Glenferrie Bronte N was the runner-up while It’s A Miracle (Jimmy Devaux) closed sharply for third. Five-year-old Brown Brinny moved over the $200,000 mark in career earnings with the Open score. The exacta and triple paid $18.40 and $120, respectively with the 6-5 favorite on top. Live racing continues on Saturday night with a first post time set for 6:45 p.m.
