Perfect trip propels Mustang Art to feature win at Dover

Dover, DE — Mustang Art and driver Ron Pierce won the $28,500 Delaware Special on a top Dover Downs Thursday (March 6) card.

Mustang Art took advantage of a pocket trip to win the Dover feature.

Pierce, who had a four-win slam, left quickly with Mustang Art before giving up the lead to Nova Artist (Allan Davis) at the quarter. Nova Artist cut out the fast pace and led halfway down the lane before Mustang Art zoomed out to victory in a :26.4 final panel for a 1:51.1 decision. Nova Artist held on to second while Jeremy’s Successor (Sean Bier) raced gamely three wide around the final turn and got up for third.

Max Walton and Greg Papaleo own Mustang Art, an Artiscape-Paula Seelster gelding who won for the second time this year, lifting the Jim McGuire-trainee to seasonal earnings of $32,575.

Pierce was also behind John Cancelliere’s Emeritus Maximus (Rocknroll Hanover-Eternity`s Delight), a 1:51.1 winner of the $18,000 Open for young horses. Wahine (Jim Morand) closed strongly to finish second with Ice Scraper (Roger Plante) streaking along the passing lane for third.

Corey Callahan and Dirty Devil teamed up for a 1:51 score in the $15,000 Winners Over Pace. Owned by Alexander Rice, Sr. and Mike Horn, the Real Artist-Ms Eyes And Thighs gelding made it four wins in seven 2014 races and a $27,200 bankroll this year. Bad Man Sam (Vic Kirby) was next while Beavercreek Artist (Pierce) was third.

Northfield Park
Y Mach Me was victorious in the $9,500 Fillies and Mares Open Pace on Thursday in Northfield Park’s ninth race. She is trained by Pat Karcher for owner Lucky Draw Racing Stable. Kurt Sugg was in the bike. Y Mach Me (Mach Three-Sunnie Corleone) started from the rail and was fourth through a taxing :27 opening quarter. Sugg pulled Y Mach Me first over approaching the half. She sustained a first over bid through fractions of :56 and 1:25.1 before taking the lead in the stretch and besting her competition by a full length in 1:55. Completing the race were Power Everywhere, Up Front Kellie Jo, Addys Way, Canaco Star, Pink Camo and Classic Sakuri. Thursday’s win was the 11th career victory for Y Mach Me and increased her lifetime earnings to $55,254. She returned $24.20 to win.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway
For the second consecutive race night, the Pick-5 was not hit at Saratoga Casino and Raceway. Offered on every race card now, the Pick-5 has become a popular bet and on Thursday longshot Danger Sign N (Life Sign) knocked out many of the bettors behind his leg one score at odds of 22-1. The 14-year-old pacer went last to first to pull off the upset in the evening’s $4,495 claiming pace. Austin Siegelman piloted Danger Sign N for trainer Allan Johnson. The Pick-5 carryover to Friday night’s pool is $3,411. The Pick-5 is a 50 cent wager and is offered on every race card in the 2014 season.
