Photo Fantasy upsets in Meadows $22,500 F&M Trot

Washington, PA — Dismissed at 11-1, Photo Fantasy worked out a comfortable pocket trip, then charged through the Lightning Lane to score the upset in Monday’s $22.500 Filly & Mare Preferred Trot at The Meadows.

Although competitive in The Meadows’ top distaff trot, Photo Fantasy had been earning checks rather than wins and thus was lightly regarded. On Monday, however, she sat behind the hard-working Kandor Hanover and brushed late for Eric Ledford to triumph in a career-best 1:55.2. Nickie K rallied for second, 1/2-length back, while Kandor Hanover saved show.

John Melsheimer trains Photo Fantasy, a 5-year-old daughter of Classic Photo-Tintern who now has banked $125,106, for Jim Winske and William Donovan.

Tony Hall drove four winners and Greg Grismore three on the 15-race card. In the 9th, Grismore scored with Mr Cruise to give Marcus Marashian the 1,000th training victory of his career.

Dover Downs
Ross Wolfenden put Southwestern Dream into the lead on the clubhouse turn and then held off Ise The By Boy the rest of the way while chalking up a 1:50.4 victory in the $31,000 Preferred pace at Dover Downs on Monday, Feb. 27. Mainland Key N and Tim Tetrick were a fast-finishing third. Jolt, a 6-year-old Powerful Toy-Merciful Maddie gelding, continued to impress as the Johnny Waite-owned and trained speedball uncorked a 1:51.1 triumph with Ross Wolfenden at the controls to win a $23,000 Open Handicap. Kiss My Art (David Miller) was runner-up. Bondy N (Tim Tetrick), a winner of his last two outings, turned in an impressive mile parked-out challenging for the lead but had to settle for third.

The Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park
The Monday evening, February 27 feature was the $12,000 purse Mares Open Handicap Pace. After Special Sweetheart driven by Joe Pavia Jr. rocketed to the front in 26.1, Best Around in rein to George Napolitano Jr. looped around to the top in the second quarter and stepped home the rest of the way in 54.4, 1:22.3 and 1:51.1. Special Sweetheart and Bryan’s Ideal partnered by Dan Clements followed next best under the wire. It was the 22nd career win for Best Around, a 6 year old Cambest-Rondeau Hanover mare mare trained by Paul Holzman for Joel Benson Stables of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She earned her speed badge of 1:50.3 at Pompano last month and the career earnings for the former claimer now stand at $109,120.
