Safe From Terror casts vote for youth in Meadows feature

Washington, PA — The lone 3-year-old in a field of six, Safe From Terror cast a vote for youth when she rolled to an easy victory in Wednesday’s $18,000 Filly & Mare Not Listed Preferred/Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.

Fresh off a win in a Pennsylvania Sires Stakes leg, Safe From Terror figured to have her work cut out for her against a group of accomplished, experienced mares. But the daughter of Western Terror-In A Safe Place quarter-poled to the lead for Dave Palone and never let her elders get close, scoring in 1:51.3. Early leader Do Me Honor was second, two lengths back, with Certified Ideal third.

Ron Burke trains Safe From Terror, who now boasts $197,344 in career earnings, for Our Horse Cents Stables, Stable 45 and J&T Silva Stables.

Palone piloted four winners and Tony Hall three on the 14-race card. Over the past three programs at The Meadows, Palone has collected 21 victories in 32 starts for a winning percentage of 65.6.

Merriman’s triumphs included TT’ssizzlinsally ($7.00) in race one, Bold Decision ($17.40) in race four, Dunks Brother ($2.20) in race five, Tiffany Malone ($4.60) in race six and Stone Of Magic ($3.40) in race 15. Merriman, 28, began driving in 2003 and has since garnered 1,764 career victories and is approaching $8 million in total purse earnings. Jason is third in Northfield’s local driving ranks with 161 wins posted so far this year. Only Ronnie Wrenn Jr. (361) and Aaron Merriman (312) have more victories this year over the Flying Turns than Jason Merriman. Ryan Stahl (123) and Kurt Sugg (106) complete the top five local drivers.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway
The Phil Fluet Stable scored a double on the Wednesday card at Saratoga Casino and Raceway. Fluet, who piloted Jimmer to victory in Tuesday’s Open Trot, scored a pair of wins with his trainees on Wednesday. Noni’s Promise (RC Royalty) broke her maiden two weeks ago at the Spa and had no difficulty securing her second lifetime score in Tuesday’s $8,250 tilt for New York sired trotters. Fluet took advantage of the inside post with Noni’s Promise as they went wire-to-wire in a career best 2:00.4. Earlier in the night, Fluet’s Frost Damage Blues (Western Ideal) broke her maiden in her first lifetime start as she paced past her rivals in the stretch before drawing away late to record a 1:58.2 score. Fluet currently ranks in the top ten in the driver standings and his stable has been on a tear of late. Live racing continues at Saratoga on Thursday night with a 7:05 p.m. first post.

Harrah’s Philadelphia
Harbor Racing’s Newcastle (Corey Callahan) dominated the featured event on Wednesday afternoon at Harrah’s Philadelphia. It was a trot for non-winners of five races or $50,000 lifetime going for a purse of $16,000. Starting from post four, the 3-year-old son of Cantab Hall came away an early third, before brushing to the top shortly after the quarter pole. From that point, he was able to maintain the advantage, stopping the clock in 1:55.3. Special Action (Scott Zeron) finished second, while Ralph R (Andy Miller) was third. It was the sixth win out of 12 starts for the Jenny Melander trainee, all coming this season, Driver Corey Callahan and George Napolitano Jr. each had four wins on the card. Live racing continues Thursday, with a first post of 12:40 p.m.
