Summer Indian storms to front-end win in Meadows trot

Washington, PA — Summer Indian stormed to the lead from post seven and kept right on rolling, capturing Monday’s $20,000 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows in 1:52.4, two ticks off the track’s all-age trotting record.

Dave Palone sent Summer Indian three wide to wrestle the early lead from Trustworthy Kid, and the 4-year-old Majestic Son-Touch Of Frost gelding easily held that rival at bay in the stretch, scoring by 1-1/2 lengths. Cantab Lindy finished third.

Ron Burke trains Summer Indian, who won for the 10th time in 21 starts this year and extended his career bankroll to $331,636, for Burke Racing Stable, Jack Piatt III, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and RTC Stables.

Palone drove five winners — three for Burke — on the 15-race card while Mike Wilder enjoyed a triple.

Dover Downs
Cheyenne Miriam tuned up for Sunday’s Matron Stake, coming on to edge race-favorite Monochromatic in the $20,000 Filly and Mare Open Handicap feature on Monday at Dover Downs.
Hall of Famer-elect David Miller pulled Cheyenne Miriam out of fifth place on the backstretch to quickly engage Monochromatic on the final turn, then battled head-to-head down the lane in a :28 final panel before sticking her nose out front for a 1:52.2 victory. It was the 3-year-old Bettor’s Delight-Alibecca filly’s 11th win this year. Jeremes Sweetheart, handled by Ross Wolfenden was third. Leased by The Cheyenne Gang and trained by Robbie Siegleman, the prominent New York Sire Stakes winning sophomore has now banked $289,005 this campaign. Cheyenne Miriam returns to the track this Sunday, racing in a Matron elimination.
