Vernon Downs
Track record holder He’s Gorgeous performed with speed and determination while winning Saturday night’s $10,000 featured ninth race at Vernon Downs in 1:50.3. Making his second local start since setting a 1:50 Vernon standard for 4-year-old pacing horses on May 7, He’s Gorgeous ($3.80) followed Mystical Valentine and Daley Deposit Only to the quarter (paced in :26.1), took the lead after the half (reached in :54.3), led by more than a length entering the stretch (three-quarter time was 1:22.3), and then out-battled Mystical Valentine to the finish of the week’s Open-1 contest. The head triumph was the second at the Downs in 2011, fourth this season and 21st overall for the speedy bay son of Art Major-So Ravishing, who has returned more than $714,000 to his owner, Ken Jacobs. Jack Rice did the teaming for the track’s top trainer, Tracy Brainard, who posted her 39th win at the 27-card meeting.

It was Gerald N Sam’s third win of the year, and the winning time establishes a new season’s mark.

Scioto Downs
I Ota Win and Sammy Storm were both impressive winners on Saturday night at Scioto Downs. I Ota Win scored a major upset victory at odds of 15-1, edging Stubby’sleisureguy, also sent off at odds of 15-1. They both benefitted from a duel between favored Show Me Glory and All Got In that resulted in both of the leaders tiring in the final quarter. That set things up perfectly for I Ota Win to rally in the stretch for trainer-driver Kayne Kauffman to win by a half-length in 1:54.3. Stubby’sleisureguy edged Yoo Hoo Bunny for third. The 5-3 exacta paid $230.00. I Ota Win is a 5-year-old gelding by On The Attack and is owned by Rick Harris. Sammy Storm, sent off at odds of 7-1, was well back in the early part of his race. Starting from post eight in the 10-horse field, he was ninth after the first half-mile. He moved up to eighth place entering the final quarter and was still seventh at the stretch call. Then the 5-year-old son of Nobleland Sam rocketed past the leaders to win by a neck in 1:55 for driver Jeff Nisonger and trainer Darin Mouser. Tami Ackley and her brother W.O. Near and Donald Beatty own Sammy Storm, who overcame a broken shoulder early in life to find success at the races. Finishing second was Junior Jesse while Spartan Pride was third. Favored J Cruise broke stride halfway through the race and finished last.

Cal Expo
There was a concern she may not be 100 percent fit, and her first quarter was backing that up. For the final three-quarters, however, Haggin Oaks was all business and defeated her male counterparts.
A mixture of conditioned and claiming pacers, racing for a purse of $3,400, were featured Saturday on closing night of the winter-spring meet at Cal Expo, in which Haggin Oaks was the pocket rocket. Racing all-out late, the daughter of Hi Ho Silverheel’s wouldn’t be denied while scoring ($7.40) by three-quarters of a length in 1:53.2, a lifetime best. Satire had to settle for second and Western So finished another 2-1/2 lengths farther back in third. The winner is owned by Shari Burns, Ferris Funk and Gerald Cimini and is trained and driven by James Kennedy.
