Record-setting Lexington Selected Yearling Sale concludes

Lexington, KY — After already reaching record-high territory in gross on Thursday, the five-day Lexington Selected Yearling Sale concluded Friday at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion with a new mark for average at $73,690.

This year’s average represented a 12.1-percent increase over the previous record of $65,687 established last year.

Seven yearlings sold for six figures on Friday, helping push the session’s total to $4.85 million for 138 horses and upping the sale’s overall gross to a record $65.28 million for 886 horses. The previous high for gross, also set last year when 863 horses passed through the ring, was $56.68 million. This year’s figure was a 15.1-percent hike compared to 2021.

Friday’s average of $35,174 fell just $539 shy of last year’s record for a fifth session.

Pacer Downbytheseaside sired Friday’s top-four sellers, all which reached at least $150,000. Topping the list was Behest, out of Endowment, who was purchased for $200,000 by Brian Brown. She is from the family of Dan Patch and O’Brien awards winner Artspeak and is eligible to Ohio and Kentucky.

Behest was bred by Steve Stewart, Michael Dean Robinson, Robert Mondillo, and Steve Cheatham. She was consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency.

The next three best sellers were colt Sea Jammer (out of Dancin With Jammy), who sold for $160,000 to David Cohen as agent for Micki Rae Stables; colt Twenty Five (Hula Shuffle), who went for $150,000 to Burke Racing Stable; and filly Flyin Bullets (Pistol Packin Mama), who was purchased for $150,000 by Ngairee Umholtz as agent.

All three are Ohio eligible. Flyin Bullets also is Kentucky eligible.

Trotting stallion Walner was the leader in gross sales with $6.94 million for 60 horses. Captaintreacherous led pacing stallions with $6.48 million for 42 horses. He led all sires in average at $154,429 while Greenshoe topped the trotters at $130,792 for 48 horses.
