Reminder on bit safety from OHHA

by Regina Mayhugh, communications director, Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association

Columbus, OH — As with all equipment, bits can wear out over time. This is a reminder to horsemen to be vigilant in checking all equipment, including bits, for safety every time you tack up your horse.

In the past six months we have seen some issues with half cheek snaffle bits breaking while in use. These bits could fall under the 2009 recall on snaffle bits or could be from another source; we are uncertain, so all bits should be checked for safety.

We would like to remind horsemen of the bit recall issued in 2009. Please be wary when purchasing any equipment from a re-sale source, these bits could be resurfacing after being purchased via a private party, e-Bay, or Craigslist. Examine all equipment including bits before purchasing. Check the bits in your barn regularly and be sure to check equipment before going onto the track.

In the broken bit cases we have seen the pin that connects the mouth piece to the cheek is what has broken. Be vigilant and examine your bits. If you have “play” between this part of your bit discontinue use immediately.

Big Dee’s Tack & Vet Supply issued a recall on snaffle bits believed to be purchased between 2005 and 2007. They will replace any bits purchased from them during this time period. Please visit their website at www.bigdweb.com or call 1.800.321.2142 for more information.
