Rookies dazzle in Dream Maker opener

Milton, ON — Capt Midnight and Allywag Hanover made it a first-round sweep of the Dream Maker Series for sire Captaintreacherous on Monday evening (July 29) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

A group of 16 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings were split into a pair of $11,400 divisions.

Capt Midnight delivered a :26.2 final quarter to reach up just in time to defeat stablemate Captain Nemo by a head in the opening split. The Tony Alagna students sat first and third throughout, with Captain Nemo and driver Tim Tetrick cutting out fractions of :27.4, :56.3 and 1:24.3.

Captain Nemo looked to scoot away in the lane and held a lead of more than three lengths with an eighth of a mile remaining. Capt Midnight and driver Andrew McCarthy quickly closed in during the final sixteenth and stormed by at the line for a 1:51.3 maiden-breaking victory. Day Delight, who got a two-hole trip, finished just over seven lengths back in third. Esai Hanover was fourth.

A $350,000 Standardbred Horse Sale purchase, Capt Midnight is the second foal out of New York Sires Stakes champion It Was Fascination. The son of Captaintreacherous is now one for three with $7,000 earned for owners Marvin Katz, Ken Jacobs, Brad Grant and Capt Midnight Racing. Capt Midnight paid $6.90 to win.

Allywag Hanover and driver Sylvain Filion dusted their rivals by four lengths in an impressive second division victory. The Casie Coleman trainee floated away and patiently worked his way up to the top, clearing to command early in the backstretch. Filion got to dictate the tempo, posting middle-half fractions of :56.4 and 1:25.4.

Allywag Hanover proceeded to fire home in :26.2 to collect a 1:52.1 victory. Chief Mate finished second, while Captain Kirk and Choir Master rounded out the superfecta.

A $95,000 Standardbred Horse Sale purchase, Allywag Hanover is the fifth foal out of Anderosa Hanover, a half-sister to millionaire Aracache Hanover. The son of Captaintreacherous is two-for-two and has earned $11,475 for owners Brad Gray and Dan Lagace. Allywag Hanover paid $7.50 to win.

The Dream Maker Series continues next Monday with the second leg prior to the final on Aug. 12.

Monday evening’s program also saw Run Director score a second consecutive victory in the $25,840 Preferred Trot. The Ben Baillargeon trainee and driver Filion came first-up from fourth on the far turn to challenge Dancer Hall at the three-quarters in 1:25.3. Run Director powered by in the lane and trotted home in :27.1 to win by three-quarters of a length over Treasured Tee. Free Willy Hanover was third, while Dancer Hall was fourth.

A 4-year-old son of Kadabra, Run Director has now won four of seven starts this season to bring his career totals to 10 wins and $400,668 earned for owner/breeders Tom and Elizabeth Rankin. Run Director paid $4.80 to win.
