Running Aces canceled again

from Running Aces Harness Park

Columbus, MN — For the third consecutive program, Running Aces races scheduled for Tuesday night (July 5) have been canceled due to the ongoing Minnesota State government shutdown caused by a budget impasse between Democratic Governor Mark Dayton and Republicans holding a majority in the state’s House of Representatives and Senate. The Governor has called for meetings to attempt to resolve the issue to resume quickly following the Fourth of July holiday.

An Associated Press release on Monday indicated a compromise could be in the works that would set the annual budget for the next two years approximately midway between the $34 billion Republicans want and the $36 billion the Governor wants. The added revenue to satisfy that budget could come from increased “sin” taxes on cigarettes and alcohol, plus expanded gaming (presumably, racinos at the two racetracks in the state). Obviously, if that were to occur, a silver lining to the current chaos would be unveiled for the horse racing industry.

A decision on the Wednesday night (July 6) card at Running Aces will be announced Wednesday morning.
