Ruth Honig and Woolco win New York Sire Stakes at Monticello

Monticello, NY — Tyler Buter had the hot hand Monday afternoon (Aug. 8) at Monticello as he drove four New York Sire Stakes winners for the 2-year-old trotting fillies.

In the first heat of NYSS racing, for a purse of $52,500, Buter went down the road to score in a wire-to-wire 1:58.3 ($5.50) aboard Ruth Honig.

Starting from post position six, the daughter of Chapter Seven made the front just past the opening panel, where she was briefly parked out in :28.4. Approaching the half, Midwind Success and the favorite, Bourbon On Ice, took to the outside, passing that marker in :59.2 with Ruth Honig still showing the way. Midwind Success had almost collared Ruth Honig as they passed the three-quarter stanza in 1:29.1, but Ruth Honig didn’t give an inch and kept her at bay and went on to win by two lengths. Midwind Success finished second, followed by Seven Bridges Road.

It was a new lifetime mark and second win of the season for the Lucas Wallin-trainee for owner Shermay Stables.

Race nine was the second heat of NYSS, worth $53,500. Mari made her way to the top just past the opening panel in :29.1. Approaching the half in :59.1, Buter pulled past with Woolco and took the lead. Destinys Darling was making a big move down the backside but broke stride as Woolco took them to the three-quarter pole in 1:29.2. Jean’s Action took her best shot at the leader, going into the paddock turn but was rebuffed. The pocket sitting Mari enjoyed a pocket trip to finish second behind Woolco with Defiant Lady taking the show spot in a 1:58.2 mile.

Woolco is a daughter of Chapter Seven and is owned and trained by Robert Krivelin (Hero Stables).

Winners of the Excelsior A series were Dazzlin Dolly (Crazy Wow), who broke her maiden in 2:02.3 ($51.50) for trainer Scott Mongeon and was driven to victory by Brian Cross.

Laurens Hoopla made a trip to the winner’s circle after her 5-3/4 length win in 2:00.2 ($10.20). The offspring of E L Titan was driven by Buter. She is trained by George Ducharme and is owned by longtime Ducharme patron Raymond Campbell Jr.

EEE Z Wow (Crazy Wow) won the lone Excelsior B event in 2:03.2 for Buter and trainer Rob Harmon.

Special Achiever lived up to her name, winning her ninth consecutive race for trainer Chris Petrelli.

Joe Chindano Jr. won a pair on the card.

New York Sire Stakes action returns on Monday (Aug. 15) with the 3-year-old trotting fillies.
