Sage named ARCI chairman

Lexington, KY — Tom Sage has been selected as chairman of the Association of Racing Commissions International (ARCI), as announced by the organization on Tuesday (April 14).

Sage began his career in horse racing in 1988 as a security officer at Ak-Sar-Ben Race Track in Omaha, Neb.

In 1991, Sage graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. He began working for the Nebraska Racing Commission in 1993 as an investigator.

Sage graduated from the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in November 1995. He was promoted to director of investigations in 2003 and was appointed the commission’s executive director in 2008.

While working for the commission, Sage also worked part-time as the police chief of Yutan, Neb., a small city 30 miles west of Omaha. He has also served as a reserve deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Sage and his wife, Tracy, have been married for 27 years. They met while working at Ak-Sar-Ben and have two sons: Andy, who is 24; and Austin, 20.

Sage is on the ARCI Board of Directors and is a member of the following ARCI committees: Executive Committee, Model Rules, Pari-Mutuel Auditors, Rider and Driver Welfare and Safety. He is also a member of the National Licensing Review Board and serves as treasurer of the National Licensing Compact.

Sage is also involved with the American Quarter Horse Association Integrity Enforcement Teams.

In 2015, Sage was the recipient of ARCI’s Len Foote Award.

Sage has been involved in supervising security at the College World Series and the United States Olympic Trials for swimming, both conducted in Omaha.

He is currently a certified law enforcement officer in his native state, and enjoys building model trains and collecting coins.
