SBOANJ presents scholarships to Coyne & Finnigan

Manalapan, NJ — Kristen Coyne and Kelly Finnigan received 2010-2011 scholarships from the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey in winner’s circle ceremonies on Friday, July 30, at Meadowlands Racetrack.

Kristen Coyne was presented with a $5,000 scholarship award.

Coyne, who also was a recipient in 2009, accepted a $5,000 award while Finnigan, whose brother, Gary Jr., was a previous winner, received $2,500. Both families enjoyed dinner and a night at the races as the guests of the SBOANJ.

Coyne, the daughter of trainer Ronald and Regina Coyne of New Egypt, N.J., is attending Rowan University (Class of 2013), studying history and education, with a concentration in special education.

Kelly Finnigan received a $2,500 scholarship award.

Finnigan, daughter of trainer Gary and Mary Finnigan of Wall, N.J., is a Dean’s List graduate from Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. She will be continuing her studies next semester at the University of Central Florida. She plans to study molecular biology with hopes of pursuing a career in research or medicine.

The SBOANJ Scholarship Committee evaluated applications based on academic standing, community service, financial need as well as eligibility.

Making the presentations on behalf of the SBOANJ were the association’s treasurer, Dennis Lane, and Dr. Chris Samaha, who oversees the Backstretch Community Assistance Program.
