Scioto handles first Derby card in decades

from Scioto Downs Racino

Columbus, OH — Scioto Downs Racino was able to simulcast the Kentucky Derby for the first time in decades this past Saturday and it was a hit, both with race players and VLT gamers.

At the Veil Bar inside the racino, a fancy hat contest was judged by Director of Racing Operations Stacy Cahill, Director of Marketing Michael Yip and Director of Food & Beverage Lee Hirschorn. Thirty entries vied for top honors and $100 cash.

“The place was erupting with excitement,” said Cahill. “The clubhouse was sold out for two private parties, people were there for the fancy hat contest and mint juleps on the VLT gaming floor and the penthouse had every table and carousel taken with not much standing room available.”

Director of Mutuels Steve Carpenito estimated that the crowd was going to surpass the amount wagered on simulcast races on a typical Saturday by 2 p.m. In the end, more than $439,000 in wagers was bet at Scioto on Derby Day.

Simulcasting is available year-round in the penthouse at Scioto Downs. Live racing will be held every Wednesday-Saturday with a post time of 6:30 p.m. from Wednesday (May 8) through Saturday (Sept. 14). Special 1 p.m. cards will be held on May 27 (Memorial Day), July 4, August 3 (State Fair races) and Sept. 2 (Labor Day).
