Campbellville, ON — Deadly Action picked up the first win of his young career in Monday night’s (July 25) Dream Maker second leg at Mohawk Racetrack.
A field of seven rookie pacing colts and geldings met up in the $10,640 second round of the three-week series. Bettor’s Dream, who won the first leg in convincing fashion, was given the week off, opening the door for another rookie to score a victory.
Art Major gelding Deadly Action kicked the door down and broke his maiden with a 1:55.1 victory. The Colin Johnson trainee got away third with driver Randy Waples before making a second-quarter move to the lead.
Bobcat Bound and trainer/driver Carl Jamieson rushed up from sixth to pressure Deadly Action around the final turn. The public’s choice Deo Galileo made a break after the half and that caused a chain reaction with three horses interfered with, including two breaking stride.
The third quarter confusion left Deadly Action and Bobcat Bound well ahead of their rivals at the three-quarter pole in 1:26.1. In the stretch, Deadly Action kept Bobcat Bound a length behind and got the job done with a :29 final quarter. Beyond Delight finished third, while Clouseau Hanover was fourth.
Deadly Action, who finished sixth in the opening leg, was making his third start of his career Monday. The Art Major-Spirit Of The West gelding was a $37,000 purchase at last fall’s Standardbred Horse Sale and he is owned by Johnson, Thomas Kyron and Mac Nichol.
The Dream Maker Series will wrap up next Monday (Aug. 1) with the C$37,800 final.
Live racing continues Tuesday evening at Mohawk Racetrack. Post time is 7:30 p.m.
