Abigail Carrol & Outta Tut
By Anne Chunko

Outta Tut was a good racehorse, earning $118,258 over the course of 5 years.

The bay trotter competed in the Virginia sire stakes races each year from 2000 to 2003. As a 3-year-old, he won the final by 13 lengths in 1:58.4 at Colonial Downs. In addition, he also raced successfully at Dover, Harrington and Rosecroft racetracks.

The handsome bay raced 117 times for owners Paul and F. Wilma Chambers. When he was no longer competitive but sound, they decided to retire him from the track and began looking for a pleasure horse home for him.

At the time “Tut” was looking for a new home and career, Abigail Carroll was looking for a new horse. In May 2003, Carroll had lost her mare to severe colic.

Carroll works at a veterinary technician in a Delaware clinic that has many Standardbred clients. She used her contacts to spread the word that she wanted to open her heart and home to a new equine friend and was willing to consider a Standardbred looking for a second career.

In July 2004, Carroll met and brought home “Tut.” He won Carroll’s heart with his quirks, making his “funny face” by sticking his tongue out and chewing on it. Carroll relates an instance typical of “Tut”: “I was talking to my sister and walking Tut in from the pasture,” she said. “I stopped to talk for a few minutes. He became impatient and began pulling. I corrected him and raised my voice. He stopped, then looked sad, and did his funny face, as if to say ‘Mom, don’t be mad!’ He is very cute!”

Tut’s retraining for saddle work began immediately, but was derailed due to an injury Carroll sustained. However, retraining continues to progress slowly, through work on the lunge line. Despite his trotting heritage, the bay has also shown some steps of pacing when worked in-hand. Carroll hopes to continue Tut’s transition work under saddle once she recovers from her injury.
