Shady Sabrina is sharp at Scarborough

by Michael M. Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, Maine — The week-long speed show continued at Scarborough Downs on Tuesday (April 24) as springtime temperatures and a lightning-fast strip combined to showcase the impressive array of horseflesh assembled at the seaside oval this year.

Shady Sabrina became the swiftest distaff pacer of the season in Maine, blazing over the historic Scarborough stone dust in 1:57.3 to claim victory in the $6,000 Open Pace. She now joins Kerogen and Super Sidney C as the top class standard bearers at The Downs.

The 5-year-old Cam’s Dignity mare set all her own rules as she led the darling divas through well measured fractions (:28.1, :58.4 and 1:28.3) while holding plenty in reserve to withstand the late stretch challenges of Blond Moment and Search The Future, who finished second and third, respectively.

Shady Sabrina is owned by Lorna Cohen of Providence, R.I., and was an early season addition to her stable via the Freehold Raceway claim box. She is trained and was reined to her second consecutive victory by Kevin Switzer.

Switzer held the hottest hand on Tuesday afternoon, springing fast from the gate to claim victory in both halves of the Daily Double. He paraded both Mac N Ernie and Heather K into the Scarborough Downs winner’s circle to open the matinee program.

Switzer and Jason Bartlett are now tied atop the leader’s board with nine seasonal wins each.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness action every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday afternoon with first post scheduled for 3:45 p.m. (EDT). The popular Sunday matinees get underway at 12:05 p.m.
