Sherman Steinberg, 78, dies

Columbus, OH — Sherman Steinberg, 78, of Holmdel, N.J. and Fort Plain, N.Y., died March 4, 2010, in Cooperstown.

Mr. Steinberg was born in New York City and taught Chemistry at New York University before becoming the owner of an industrial paint manufacturing company, North American Technologies in Ocean Township, N.J.

His true love was horses. He became involved in the harness racing industry over 25 years ago and raised and raced many Standardbreds at tracks all over New York and New Jersey. He owned a farm for several years in Plumsted Township, and most of his horses bore the last name Plumsted.

In recent years, he moved his operations to upstate New York to the Ola Farm. There he also manufactured his own root beer also bearing the name Ola — a company that his father had begun in New York City many years earlier and which Mr. Steinberg resurrected.

He was also an avid nature photographer and played violin.

Mr. Steinberg is survived by his wife, May; daughter, Jo-Ann; son, Andrew; and grandchildren, Carnig and Rachael Shakarjian and Daniel and Annabelle Steinberg.

The funeral service will be held graveside at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, at the Floral Park Cemetery, 104 Deans Rhode Hall Road, Monmouth Junction, under the direction of Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan.
