Slick Tony soars to Dover upset

Dover, DE — Slick Tony used an explosive late turn of foot to narrowly spring a 9-1 upset in the $21,000 Open Handicap Pace on Thursday night (Feb. 4) at Dover Downs.

Tyga Hanover and Numbered Account blasted off the wings of the gate and engaged in a cutthroat duel. After being parked the entirety of the first turn, Numbered Account and driver Tim Tetrick cleared to the lead after a wicked :26.1 first quarter and continued to the half in :54.1. Even money favorite JJ Flynn launched his bid from fifth up the backstretch and Slick Tony watched all the action from last before angling fourth-over into a live flow.

Numbered Account reached three-quarters in 1:22, but was gathered in by JJ Flynn on the final turn. Meanwhile, Victor Kirby fanned Slick Tony six-wide at the top of the lane, and and the 6-year-old No Spin Zone entire got up in the final stride to win by a nose in 1:50.3. JJ Flynn (Art Stafford Jr.) was a courageous second; Major Pocket A (Pat Berry) finished with late pace to take third.

George Leager owns and trains Slick Tony, who paid $21.40 to win.

Dexter Dunn won three races on the 13-race card.

Corey Callahan injured his back as a result of a weather-related fall. He hopes to return to action on Saturday night (Feb. 6) at The Meadowlands.

Racing at Dover Downs continues on Monday (Feb. 8). Post time is 4:30 p.m.
