Slugfest takes Open Trot at Saratoga

from Saratoga Casino and Raceway

Saratoga, NY — Slugfest (Conway Hall) scored his second consecutive Open Trot victory on Sunday (April 19) afternoon at Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

The defending Trotter of the Year at the Spa, Slugfest prevailed first-over in 1:56.1 last week for regular driver Jay Randall. On Sunday, the Maureen Salino-trained 6-year-old moved out to the early lead. After an opening half in 57.4, Slugfest felt just mild pressure from the race favorite Zooming (Billy Dobson) before putting him away around the final turn and scoring in 1:55.2, the fastest trotting time of the season thus far at Saratoga.

Slugfest paid $13.40 to win while pulling off the mild upset over Mikey Hanover (Mark Beckwith) who finished second and Fox Valley Veto (Jim Devaux) who earned the show spot. Slugfest became the first two-time Open Trot winner on the young season at the Spa.

Live racing resumes on Thursday afternoon with a 4 p.m. first post time.
