Something for Doc wins Open Handicap Pace at Yonkers

by Frank Drucker, Yonkers Raceway Publicity Director

Yonkers, NY — Something for Doc (Matt Kakaley) used a different tact to get a similar result Saturday night, winning Yonkers Raceway’s $35,000 Open Handicap Pace.

Leaving from post position No. 4 as the 3-4 favorite, Something for Doc allowed someone else to control the early action. That someone was the returning Tobago Cays (Jim Pantaleano), who led through early intervals of :27.1 and :57 flat.

Roadway (George Brennan) moved from fourth toward the 1:24.1 three-quarters, with second-choice Electrofire (Brian Sears) second-over.

Meanwhile, Tobago Cays owned a length-and-a-half lead into the lane, but was about to feel the pinch. Something for Doc edged out from the pocket, leaving the passing lane to Nob Hill High (Tyler Buter). The former whipped the latter by a head in 1:53.1. Electrofire grabbed the bottom of the ticket, with Tobago Cays and locally-debuting Mr. Hasani N (Brent Holland) settling for the minor spoils.

For Something for Doc, a 5-year-old Western Hanover gelding co-owned (as Burke Racing) by trainer Ron Burke, Weaver Bruscemi and Strollin Stable, he returned $3.50 for his third win (second consecutive Saturday feature) in four seasonal starts. The exacta paid $37, with the triple returning $161.
