Sons of Sportswriter sweep OSS Gold

from the Ontario Sires Stakes

Campbellville, ON — Colts from the first crop of Sportswriter swept a trio of $65,800 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold divisions at Mohawk on Monday night (July 7) for 2-year-old pacing colts, including a pair from the Casie Coleman stable where Sportswriter also resided during his racing career.

In the second and quickest test it was Sportsmanship grabbing early control but he was passed at the opening quarter in :27.4 by favorite Deetzy. That colt’s tenure on top wasn’t long though as up came Chris Christoforou with Bob Ben And John who hit the half in :56.2 and the three-quarters in 1:24.3. He simply pulled away from the field to win handily in 1:53. Win One Soon was second with York Seelster third.

It was the first lifetime start for Bob Ben And John, owned by Coleman’s West Wins Stable and Adriano Sorella. A $17,000 purchase at last year’s Lexington Selected Sale, the Sportswriter-My Best Girl colt is a half-brother to $223,097 winner Ohmybelle.

In the first test it was Manny In Sports on top first to head the field by the opening quarter in :28.1. Colonys Best came out from second to take over before the :56.4 half. Windsong Lightning then came first over to challenge and was head to head with the leader at the three-quarters in 1:25.1.

As the colts came down the stretch Manny In Sports found room up the rail for James MacDonald and hit the wire first in 1:53.4. However, it was determined that the Badlands Hanover colt had violated the pylon rule and was therefore placed sixth. That moved second place finisher Rollwiththepunches, driven by Christoforou, into the winner’s spot followed by Windsong Lightning and Colonys Best.

Coleman trains and West Win Stable owns Rollwiththepunches, a Sportswriter-Terroronthebeach colt making his career debut off a pair of qualifiers.

The third and final division saw Sportsranger first to the front but when he went off-stride at the :27.2 first quarter that allowed Sporting The Look to take over and he hit the half in :56.4, the three-quarters in 1:25.4 and was home first in 1:53.2. Physicallyinclined was second for Paul MacDonell while John Campbell and Go Daddy Go closed from the back of the pack to finish third.

Jody Jamieson piloted Sporting The Look (Sportswriter-Lyons Mandi) to his first lifetime win for father Carl Jamieson who trains and co-owns with Tom Kyron and the colt’s breeder 30 Plus Stable.

This was the first Gold test for this group in 2014. Their Grassroots counterparts will be at Mohawk Tuesday evening for their first meeting of the year. The next event for the Gold boys will be at Grand River on July 16. To view the complte results from Monday night’s races please click this link.
