Sophomore pacers contest DSBF splits

Dover, DE — On a very rainy Thursday (March 21) at Dover Downs, sophomore pacing colts got their Dover series of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund underway. There was an early non-wagering event followed by the first half of the daily double, with each carrying a purse of $20,000.

The non-wagering event was all last year’s winner, Chillaxin Away (Roddy’s Bags Again-Shake Away), as he pulled away at the wire to win by 6-1/2 lengths for leading driver Tim Tetrick in 1:52.4 for a new lifetime record even with the inclement weather. He is trained by Jim King Jr. for owner-breeder JoAnn Looney-King. He was followed home by Airspinder (No Spin Zone-David’s Art) and Keepmywiglegametyt (Mr Wiggles-Airtight).

The wagering race went to the much-favored Montrell Teague-driven, bred, and owned Goldberg (Mr Wiggles-Chausettes Blanche) in 1:53.2 after a serious mishap cut his 2-year-old season short in September. Mr Big Wig (Mr Wiggles-Miss Muffet) was second and Numbered Account (Roddy’s Bags Again-Mathamomics) finished third.

The colts will return for the second leg next Thursday (March 28). Post time at Dover Downs is 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
