Southwind Terror headlines Legends leg at Cumberland

Cumberland, ME — Southwind Terror has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite for the second leg of the Freeman Parker Maine Legends Series for older male pacers on Tuesday (July 13) at Cumberland.

The opening leg was held at Bangor last week, which witnessed the interruption of Southwind Terror’s five-race win streak by Gold Star Spider in 1:56.2. The two horses have met multiple times with the former besting the latter on all occasions except the last gathering, making this rematch one to watch.

Southwind Terror, trained by Christopher Hitchcock and driven by Nick Graffam, comes into the race with five wins and two seconds in his last seven starts, earning $11,000 in his last five. The 11-year-old son of Camluck is owned by Michael Pease, has 48 wins lifetime, and scores from post two.

Gold Star Spider (post three, 5-2) is conditioned by Valerie Grondin and is driven by Heath Campbell (with co-owns with Gino Mattucci). The 7-year-old son of Rock On has two wins and two seconds in his last five starts, earning $6,974.

The field is comprised of six eligible pacers, each looking ahead to the $12,500 final Wednesday (July 21) at Bangor.

The series is open to Standardbreds that have started for a base claiming price of $6,000 or less since Nov. 1, 2020, and have not won for a base claiming price exceeding $8,000, or have not won a race for a purse of $10,000 or more from Nov. 1, 2020 through date of first leg entry.

Making the presentation to the winning Legends connections will be Don Lambert, assistant store manager for the North Yarmouth Blue Seal Feed with the ‘swag bucket’ trophy of stable supplies.

Post time for the nine-race Tuesday (July 13) card has been extended to 2:45 p.m. to allow for weekly qualifiers, as well as two non-betting races to be held before the pari-mutuel program. The colts race first for a purse of $9,192, which will be the first money start for all five of the freshman cross-steppers. The colt with the most experience is Katahdin Mark, a brown colt by Noble Venture, trained and driven in three qualifying races by Gary Hall. All the other entrants have encountered the starting gate on at least one previous occasion.

Five trotting fillies embrace the second $9,208 non-betting event for Maine-bred freshmen. Local trainer Valerie Grondin sends three postward, all of which are owned by Bill Varney, with two that he bred as well.
