Standardbred trainer hosts fundraising concert for SRF

Cream Ridge, NJ —  The King Street Bluegrass Band had graciously offered to entertain at the Standardbred Retirement Foundation’s Holiday Fun at the Farm-Beer and Wine Tasting. The cancellation of the event, due to COVID-19, has caused a great loss of funds for SRF as they provide for 386 horses. Knowing the struggle SRF faces the founding member of this fabulous band has rallied them together for an online concert.

Nancy Lisi, one of the founding members of the band, is a 45-year veteran of the harness racing sport. After working as a groom in the 1970s, and showing her talent as the second trainer for George Warthen in the 1980s, she had her own stable with the Maryland champion Sarah’s Double, and Ohio’s Horse of the Year, Majestic Falcon. As a sidelight, she often held jam sessions at her hometown racetrack, Rosecroft Raceway, with her friends playing a variety of music.

Lisi owns a few rescued trotters herself. She is aware that many of these horses, when no longer profitable, are sold to individuals who profit through resale for slaughter, or resale to very hard working lives as machinery in the rural communities.

Fred Hudson will be speaking at the online concert as an advocate for SRF’s 31-year-old non-profit. He will also auction off a signed copy of his book on the Roosevelt Raceway years, “Where it all Began,“ a beautiful print of the famous Foiled Again, and a few surprise items for great holiday gifts to help the effort. There is interaction through this Facebook Live event for bidding while enjoying the music.

Join in for a $9.99 donation from 2 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 14). It will run for at least two hours. To join in and support this fundraiser, follow this link.

SRF is grateful to the King Street Bluegrass Band, the donors of the auction items, and to Nancy, especially, for spearheading the event.
