Susie G. Helfrich, 99, dies

Washington Court House, OH – Susie G. Helfrich, 99, of Washington Court House, OH died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at 7:45 p.m. at Court House Manor Nursing Home where she had been residing since 2016.

Susie was born March 13, 1921, in Washington Court House, OH to Homer Glen and Carsie Jane Craig Garringer. She was a lifelong resident of this community.

She was a 1938 graduate of Washington High School and a 1942 graduate of the Middletown Hospital School of Nursing.

During World War II, she worked at the Fayette County Public Health Department. She later worked in the private practices of Dr. James Rose and Dr. Cheng-Haw Hung.

Susie was part of the rich history of Standardbred racing in Fayette County with her involvement in Su Ne Rich Stables, and one horse, Little Jerry Way, was named Ohio Horse of the Year. She traveled the world with her family and friends and was an accomplished ballroom dancer, gardener and sailfish enthusiast, all for which she received numerous recognitions and awards on local and national levels.

She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, M. Caroline and Charles Shaper; a brother-in-law, Richard Sanderson, and a nephew, Roger Neil Shaper.

She is survived by a sister, Wilma J. (Billie) Sanderson of Houston, TX; two nieces and a nephew, Sanda J. Launey of Cypress, TX; Diane VanReed and her husband, Eric, of Chalfont, PA and Christopher T. Shaper and his wife, Michelle Toth Shaper, of Hagerstown, MD; five great nephews; a great niece and very special friends, Ed and Connie Dean and Janet Karlet.

In keeping with her wishes, she was buried beside her parents in Washington Cemetery on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at 2 p.m.

There was no funeral or visitation.

Susie’s family extends special thanks to the nurses and aides on “Airy Acres” at Court House Manor Nursing Home; Ohio’s Hospice of Fayette County; the office and staff of Dr. Dale Reno and the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home.
