Sylvia MacDonald, 82, dies

Columbus, OH — Sylvia Kathleen (Strickland) MacDonald, 82, died March 12, 2012, at her residence, St. John and St. Stephen Church Home.

Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Florence (MacLean) Strickland. She moved to Saint John in 1948. She loved all sports, especially baseball, hockey and harness racing.

She was employed by Exhibition Park for over 30 years as Clerk of Course and later its first CTA field rep.

Her late husband, Angus (Sonny), was a star goalie of the Maritime senior hockey scene and also a driver-trainer. They were followed into the sport by sons Clyde, Bruce and Ross, all of whom drove and trained. Bruce enjoyed tremendous success in Ontario in recent years with Card Trick Hanover p,4,1:49.1 ($674,717).

Mrs. MacDonald is survived by her children, Albert (Margaret), Bonnie (Charles) Charette, Heather (Leroy) Hatfield, Bruce and Ross; grandchildren, Christine, Michael, Blair, Heather, Bonnie, Erin and Cal; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Clyde.

Visitation will take place at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Thursday (March 15) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday (March 16) at 11 a.m. from Grace Presbyterian Church, 101 Coburg Street.
