Dover, DE — Tawny, making her first start in two weeks, pulled an 8-1 surprise in the $23,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace on Tuesday, February 1 at Dover Downs.

Tawny held off Jett Away to win the Mares Open Handicap Pace on Tuesday.

Brad Hanners moved Skip Miller’s Tawny three wide on the backstretch with race favorite Jett Away (Bret Brittingham) attempting to pass four wide at the three-quarters. The pair raced as a team in the stretch with Tawny holding on for a 1:53.2 victory. Cams Little Imp N (Ross Wolfenden) left alertly and led until reaching the far turn and then held on for third.

The victory was the second in Open competition and third of the meet in five starts for Tawny. The win was the first of four for the day by meet-leading driver Brad Hanners.

Seasin won a tight photo at the wire in the Mares Winners Over Pace.

Roger Plante picked up his second training and driving win of the card, guiding Seasin between horses to score a 1:55.4 win in the $15,000 sub-featured Mares Winners Over Pace. It was the third win in four starts this year for the eight-year-old Mergers Cousin mare owned by Plante. My Gal Phyl (Roger Hammer), off at 24-1, finished second. Chessy Rose (Brad Hanners) was third.

Plante won earlier steering Ron McLenaghan’s Lastline Hanover to a 1:53.2 wire-to-wire triumph in a $20,000 claiming allowance. Love Of Art (Toby Lynch) was runner-up with Harold Abbe N (Brad Hanners) taking third.

Wendy Crissman and 49 Racing Stables’ Los Barvos, with Hal Belote in the bike, had just enough to hold off Frisky Fella (Sam Beegle) at the wire in 1:56.1 to win a $10,500 trot. Prank Player (Tim Curtin) was the show horse.

Another driver with a double was Jim Morand. Richard Esham’s Gentleman Jate won the $10,000 Delaware claiming pace in 1:56.2 to become Morand’s first winner.

He then steered Bob Cacamese’s The Master N to victory in 1:56.3 to take a $17,500 claiming allowance. TSM Spirited T (Bret Brittingham) was second in front of KT Beaner (Travis Bowman) in a tight photo finish.

The Claimer of the Meet the last two seasons, Incredible Golfer, claimed back last week by Tina Clark and Gary Evans, won for the third time in four starts, giving Brad Hanners a third triumph, winning a $12,500 Delaware claiming allowance in 1:55.1.

Trio to clash in Wednesday’s feature

A pair of $40,000 claiming paces and two $10,200 Delaware paces will top a strong Wednesday, February 2 card at Dover Downs. Post time will be 4:30 p.m.

In the first of the claiming features, MJGB Racing’s Company Stock, a 1:541 winner last week for Tim Curtin; Nick Callahan’s Life Moves On, with George Dennis to do the driving, and who boasts two wins and three seconds in his last five starts; Gemini Racing’s Iced Yankee, to be piloted by Jim Morand; and Woody Long and Bill Mears’ Ace Of Diamonds, to be reined by Kevin Sizer, have been the sharpest of the nine starters who will be vying for a $16,500 purse.

Roy Parker’s Maverick Seelster drew the rail and will be piloted by Eddie Dennis, and Cantwell Bridge Stable’s Lar’s Legacy, and driver Brad Hanners, the meet’s leading dashwinning driver, will leave from the outside post position, number eight.

The other starters will be Dom Rafanelli’s Galactic Council N, to be handled by Roger Plante, Irwin Samelman’s Hezaumpin Bluegrass and driver Frank Milby, and Herb Abbe N, to be driven by Ross Wolfenden for owners Bill Dittmar and Steve Iaquinta.

Another nine horse race will close the 15-race program, a $40,000 claiming pace which appears to be a wide-open affair. Howard Taylor’s Moon Sign (Ed Nickle), who will get his best post in some time, number two, and Crissman, Inc. and W.J. McDougall Racing’s Ronnie Mac A (George Dennis), who will start from the second tier, have both been in good form. JP Hickory (Jim Morand), owned by Nick and Corey Callahan, will make his debut racing for a tag, and Country Girl Stable’s Magic Force (Mike Cole) will also get his best starting position, number four, since early December. Carter Racing’s Bonn Rocket N (Brad Hanners) will start from the rail, and Rodney Mitchell’s Elijay Ed (Eddie Davis), Dave Hill’s Keystone Reggie (Eddie Dennis), and John Cabot’s Original Sam (Eddie Davis, Jr.) will complete the field.

Ed Chandler’s strong finishing Taylor’s Smile is the entrant who won the last time out who will race in the first $10,200 Delaware pace for three, four and five-year-olds. Fred Politt’s Tyler’s Coin (Jim Morand) finished second last time.

In the other division, R’N’B Artist (Herve Filion) will leave from the outside, following a win last time out, and 819 Stable’s Ponderosa Spur (Roger Plante) and Russ and Elaine MacKinnon’s Doug’s Boy (Wayne Truitt), both second in their previous starts, drew the inside post positions.

Two $20,000 claiming paces are also on the program. In one, trainer-driver Toby Lynch, Jr.’s Destry Hanover, a full brother to the popular stallion The Panderosa, will make his first start in a claiming race.

In the other, Bruce Stover and trainer Mark A. King’s Ridge A (Steve Warrington) will step up in price after having posted his third win at the meet.
