Wilkes-Barre, PA — Racing gets underway for the 2018 season at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono on Saturday (March 17) and applications can be submitted for review starting Feb. 1.

Interested horsemen should submit their stall/ship-in applications online only. The stable area opens for the season on March 1.

Regarding the 2018 racing season, there are two significant changes. The monthly stall rent has been reduced from $250 to $200 per stall. Also, trainers will have the option of using either straw or shavings as their bedding for stalls. If a trainer chooses shavings as their bedding, they will be billed for its removal at the end of the month. Anyone with questions concerning bedding can contact Luann Reynolds, the Stall Superintendent, at either 570.831.2125 or 570.814.1842.

The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono will begin racing with an abridged racing schedule for the first three weeks. The second week in April will begin the full four-day schedule consisting of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Saturday. All post times will be 7 p.m., with the exception of April 1 that features a 5 p.m. holiday post time. Kentucky Derby Day (May 5) will feature a double card of an 11 a.m. day card and another card at 7:30 p.m. Both May 19 and June 9 will have a special 7:30 p.m. post time. The night of the Breeders Crown (Oct. 27) will also have a special post time, which will be determined at a future date.

The first qualifying races will be held on Tuesday (March 6), Thursday (March 8) and Wednesday (March 14) prior to the start of the 2018 racing season. Wednesdays will be the normal qualifying day as the season gets underway.
