Top fillies meet in NJSS finals on Wednesday

by Carol Hodes, for the New Jersey Sire Stakes

East Rutherford, NJ — Two-year-old fillies — trotters in the fifth race and pacers in the seventh race — will meet in a pair of $175,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Finals on Wednesday, July 9, at the Meadowlands.

Celebrity Athena, a Yankee Glide-Show Me Leg filly trained by Staffan Lind, has been installed as the slight 3-1 favorite from post seven in the trotting filly division, the fifth race. She made her pari-mutuel debut in the second leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes and turned in a :27.3 final quarter in a 1:59 mile to win with Brian Sears at the lines.

Owned by the Celebrity Farms, she was acquired for $70,000 at the Lexington Selected Sale.

Val D’Or Farms’ Twist N Clout, trained by Joe Holloway and driven by John Campbell, has two wins in two starts. The Western Ideal-Economic Clout filly captured a division of the Debutante on June 25 in 1:55.4 and posted a 1:54 mile in her NJSS debut on July 2.

Twist N Clout was a $40,000 Harrisburg Yearling Sale purchase.

Act Of Grace, a daughter of Valley Victory, set the NJSS record for 2-year-old trotting fillies of 1:55.3 in 1995. The 2-year-old pacing fillies’ mark of 1:53.1 is shared by Emory Girl (Sherman Almahurst, 1991) and Ladyjack (Cam’s Card Shark, 1999).
