Trixton romps in Goodtimes

Campbellville, ONTrixton, the 1-9 choice in the C$272,100 Goodtimes Stakes for 3-year-old trotters, lived up to his billing with another facile triumph Saturday at Mohawk.

Trained and driven by Jimmy Takter, who is obviously hoping the win will be the start of a huge night for his stable, Trixton romped as his odds reflected, scoring by six lengths in a stakes, track and Canadian record time of 1:51.3. It was his fifth consecutive win of the season after finishing second in his opener.

And while he’s got a lot to live up to, being a son of 2009 US Horse of the Year Muscle Hill, he could be on his way. Muscle Hill retired with earnings of over $3.3 million, won 20 of 21 overall and was undefeated in his 3-year-old year, including victories in the Hambletonian, World Trotting Derby, Canadian Trotting Classic and Breeders Crown.

Takter sends out Uffizi Hanover in the Fan Hanover later on the card, then has two hopefuls for the C$1 million Pepsi North America Cup, elim winners Tellitlikeitis and Lyonssomewhere, the first and third choices in the morning line.

He doesn’t drive those, but he’s been partnered with Trixton, co-owned by Brixton Medical Ab and Christina Takter, in virtually all of his starts, except for his first two outings as a 2-year-old.

Trixton took over from Harper Blue Chip after a half in :55, got to three-quarters in 1:22.4 and floated home in record time, eclipsing another Takter trainee, Little Brown Fox’s Canadian and track record by one-fifth of a second.

“The track is a little bit loose because of the sun,” explained Takter. “He had to work hard for it. It was top speed. I had to do a lot of work to get where I wanted to be. Great horses overcome anything in this game. I haven’t asked him for everything yet. I never popped the plugs on him. He’s still within himself. I know he’s an honest horse. If some horse comes and challenges him, he definitely will put in another gear.”

Takter has a couple of other highly-regarded three-year-old trotters in his barn, Father Patrick and Nuncio. “Those two are very good horses and were top in their league last year. So they have more credentials than he (Trixton) has. But this horse is bred to be a great horse and he’s definitely showing he has the ability. Setting a record on this track tonight, it’s an achievement. He’ll have a couple of weeks off then he’ll go in the Stanley Dancer at the Meadowlands.”

Trixton, who earned C$136,500 for the win, has now banked almost C$300,000.
