Tropical Storm Bi captures Saratoga Open

by Mike Sardella, for Saratoga Casino Hotel

Saratoga Springs, NY — Tropical Storm Bi (Yankee Glide) went the fastest mile of any trotter at Saratoga Casino Hotel this season when last Sunday (May 13) he wired the field in 1:54.3 with Jimmy Devaux in the sulky.

Tropical Storm Bi recorded his first ever win in the local feature as he stopped the timer in 1:55.4.

One week removed from that impressive score, the Tony Ciuffetelli-trained Tropical Storm Bi moved into the Open Trot on Sunday (May 20) and went off as the public’s 4-5 betting favorite as he looked to repeat.

The 6-year-old gelding made an easy lead in the $14,500 Open and never looked back. Tropical Storm Bi recorded his first ever win in the local feature as he stopped the timer in 1:55.4 in a wire-to-wire romp on Sunday. Stirling Cadet (Frank Coppola Jr.) finished second despite getting a first-over journey in the feature while the race’s lone lady Consolidator (Jordan Derue) earned the show spot in the Open for the second consecutive week.

It was the fourth victory of the season for Tropical Storm Bi who paid $3.90 to win and led an exacta and triple that returned $26.20 and $83.50, respectively.

Live racing resumes on Thursday afternoon at Saratoga with a 12:15 p.m. first post.
