Update: East Coast tracks closed due to Hurricane Sandy

Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy several Eastern tracks will be closed or have changes their draw schedules. Here are the closures and changed that we have received as of 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Please check back regularly for updates.

Pocono Downs cancels live racing and simulcasting and closes OTBs on Tuesday

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Hurricane Sandy has forced the cancellation of live racing at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs for Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012.

The Simulcast room at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, as well as all three Off Track locations, in East Stroudsburg, Lehigh Valley, and Carbondale, will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Live racing will resume at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 6:30 p.m., eastern.

Dover adjusts its draw schedule

Dover, DE — Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy the Dover Downs Racing Office has revised its draw schedule for the opening week of the upcoming 2012-2013 season. The Race Office did not open on Monday, Oct. 29 and will remain closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Conditions permitting, the Dover Downs Racing Office will open on Wednesday morning, Oct. 31 at 8:00 a.m., eastern. A double draw has been scheduled on that day for the opening day card, Sunday, Nov. 4 and for Monday, Nov.5. Dover Downs’ tentative schedule is:

Tuesday, Oct. 30 – Closed;
Wednesday, Oct. 31 – Entry Box Opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 10:00 a.m.; draw for both Sunday, Nov. 4 and Monday, Nov. 5;
Thursday, Nov. 1 – Entry box opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 10:00 a.m.; draw for Tuesday, Nov. 6 and also for qualifying races to be conducted on Friday, Nov. 2;
Friday, Nov. 2 – Entry box opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 10:00 a.m.; draw for Wednesday, Nov. 7; qualifying races will be conducted at 10:00 a.m.; and
Sunday, Nov. 4 – Races will begin at 5:30 p.m.

During the regular schedule, live racing is conducted each Monday through Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and there is no racing on Fridays and Saturdays.

Yonkers adds to its closures

Yonkers, NY — A reminder from Yonkers Raceway and Empire City regarding the Hurricane Sandy-related cancellations, closures and schedule amendments: Live racing and evening simulcasting have been cancelled for Tuesday night, Oct. 30.

Live racing and evening simulcasting is scheduled to resume Thursday night, Nov. 1, with the usual 7:10 p.m., eastern first post and afternoon simulcasting is scheduled to resume Friday, with the beginning of the Aqueduct meet.

Horsemen are advised that since the race office was closed Monday there is an altered draw schedule: As of now, a double draw for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3 is scheduled for Tuesday, with the entry box for both days closing on Tuesday at 4 p.m. For more information contact the race office at (914) 457-2627.

Also note that Empire City’s casino hours have been amended: The casino, which closed at midnight on Sunday remains closed and is scheduled — weather permitting — to reopen on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Rosecroft cancels in Tuesday card

Fort Washington, MD — Due to the severe weather projected for the Mid-Atlantic region, Rosecroft Raceway has cancelled its Tuesday, Oct. 30 live race card. The Tuesday card will be carried over, in its entirety, and raced on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the normal 7:25 p.m., eastern post time. Scratch time for that race card will be Thursday morning at 10 a.m.

The current condition sheet for the Nov. 3 and 6 race dates will be modified so that the races originally scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3 — normally drawn on Wednesdays — will now be moved to Tuesday, Nov. 6, with entries being drawn on Thursday, Nov. 1 between noon and 3 p.m.

Simulcasting, day and night on both Monday, Oct. 29 and Tuesday, Oct. 30 has also been cancelled at Rosecroft. Check www.rosecroft.com for updates or changes due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy. Information will also be available by calling (301) 567-4500.

Monticello Raceway cancels racing on Monday and Tuesday

Monticello, NY — Monticello Raceway has canceled racing on both Tuesday (Oct. 29). Weather permitting, live racing is scheduled to resume on Wednesday (Oct. 31) with first post at 12:50 p.m.

Beginning Thursday (Nov. 1), raceway post times will revert back to 12:25 p.m. and continue at that time until February 2013.

Harrington cancels Monday racing

Harrington, DE — Live racing was canceled for Monday (Oct. 29) at Harrington Raceway and the four Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund events that had been scheduled on Monday will now be contested Wednesday evening (Oct. 31) at 6 p.m.

The Meadows cancels its Tuesday race card; race under saddle is rescheduled

Washington, PA — The Meadows Racetrack and Casino has cancelled Tuesday’s live racing due to the expected impact of Hurricane Sandy. All Meadows off-track wagering sites will open on Tuesday at 6 p.m., eastern for simulcasting and the on-track simulcast parlor will be open during its regular hours on Tuesday. All wagering sites will be open on Wednesday and live racing is scheduled to resume on Wednesday at 6:55 p.m.

In addition, the Meadows Standardbred Owners’ Association and The Meadows Racetrack and Casino have moved the Racing Under Saddle (RUS) event from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7.

Note that the remainder of the Oct. 31 card will continue as scheduled and only the under-saddle has been moved.

Wednesday will remain “Pink Out” night at The Meadows, featuring several events to raise money for Pittsburgh’s Magee Women’s Hospital Breast Cancer Research Fund. Post time will be at is 6:55 p.m.

UPDATE (OCT. 30, 12:43 p.m.):The Meadows Racetrack & Casino off-track sites will be closed Tuesday afternoon, but will reopen for simulcasting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The race book at the track will maintain regular Tuesday hours.

All sites are expected to return to regular hours Wednesday. Live racing is set to resume Wednesday at 6:55 p.m..

Vernon Downs closes simulcasting

Vernon, NY — Vernon Downs has closed simulcast operations for Tuesday, Oct. 30, although casino and Hotel operations remain open at this time and simulcast operations are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Meadowlands Racetrack to open Friday; Winners Bayonne open Wednesday

East Rutherford, NJ —Winners Bayonne will be open for simulcast wagering on Wednesday (Oct. 31) while Meadowlands Racetrack will remain closed as preparations are made to re-open the building to the public after Hurricane Sandy.

Winners Bayonne (201-436-2570; WinnersBayonne.com) is located at 400 Route 440 North at the Fifth Street Connection in Bayonne, N.J. McLoone’s Bayonne Grille will also be open.

Meadowlands Racetrack would like to assure customers that its grandstand will be open for the full-card simulcast of the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships from Santa Anita on Friday (Nov. 2) and Saturday (Nov. 3).
