Vita Yakin memoriam from James Bernstein

Editor’s Note: Following is a memoriam for long-time horsewoman Vita Yakin, written by former driver and trainer James Bernstein. An official obituary will be posted if it becomes available.

Columbus, OH — Vita Yakin, a superb horsewoman, passed away at 67 this week from a disease usually associated with elders.

Vita had been a good friend to all at Monticello since the early 1970s. She grew up on Long Island, N.Y.

Vita and Richie Yakin married in the early 1970s.

Vita owned, trained and cared for her horses with great love for nearly 50 years. At one point in her career, Vita set the “under saddle” trotting record at the Goshen Historic track.

Vita and the late John Gilmour were partners in life and on the racetrack until John’s death.

Vita moved into race administration as assistant race secretary at Monticello for a time. She also worked in the race office the last two years that Rockingham Park raced.

The last year or so Vita lived with her sister in New Jersey.

Vita will be remembered as a friend to all during the heyday of Monticello Raceway.

Rest in peace, Vita Yakin.
